G.A.A Skills
In February 2012, Cavan Sports Partnership through its Sports Inclusion Programme held a GAA Skills Programme for adults with learning or intellectual disability in Stradone community centre, Cavan. The intention of the programme was to allow participants to meet new people while participating in sport. This exciting four week programme was delivered in partnership with the GAA Ulster Council. The programme was a great success as it allowed participants from a number of services to mix and compete with new people in a fun environment. In total there were 60 participants who completed the four week programme covering six services: Rehab Care Cavan, Drumlin House Cootehill, Cavan Mental Health Services, National Learning Network Cavan, Clogher House Cavan and Virginia DAU.
Easter Camp Abilities
Cavan Sports Partnership held successful Easter Camp abilities In April 2012. The camp was a great success as all 35 places were filled well in advance and the participants had fun taking part in the wide range of sports and activities at the two day camp. These activities included Gaelic, Soccer, Tai Chi, Dance/Aerobics, Parachute Games and Judo. All of this allowed the children to have fun and interaction with others while engaging in physical activity.
Soccer Skills
Soccer Skills is a sporting initiative of Cavan Sports Partnership, run in conjunction with the FAI. The 5 week programme began in April and was held on the Astroturf facility at Cavan Leisure Centre. The soccer skills programme is one of the most successful delivered by the Cavan Sports Partnership and each session is met with great enthusiasm by participants, group leaders and coaches.
Cavan Sports Partnership Sports Ability Camp
Cavan Sports Partnership through its Sports Inclusion Programme held a Sports Ability Summer Camp in July 2012. This Summer Camp was bigger & better than last years as it ran for 4 days long including an outdoor activities adventure in Tanagh Outdoor Education Centre & swimming in Cavan Leisure centre. The camps catered for children with a disability aged 5-14 years and their siblings.
This multi sports camp was be supported by coaches from National Governing Bodies of sport along with local sports coaches / tutors.
Halloween Camp Abilities
Cavan Sports Partnership held their first Halloween Camp Ability in November for children with a disability aged 5-14 years and their siblings. This camp was organised due to the success of similar camps held during easter and summer months. The two day camp was held at Stradone Community Centre and was attended by 23 children in total, who participated in activities including G.A.A, Judo, Athletics, Tag Rugby, Zumba and Multi Sports. Cavan Sports Partnership would like to thank all those involved in making the camp a success, the children, the parents, the coaches, County Athletics board and Virginia Rugby Club for their support.
Transition Year Disability Awareness Training
This programme which is facilitated by the Irish Wheelchair Association was delivered to nine second level schools in Cavan in 2012. The training has received positive feedback from all schools which have completed the training. The training aims to educate students about different disabilities and how to be inclusive. The experience aims to develop more positive and respectful attitudes towards people with a disability.
Outdoor Initiative
The department of Justice and Equality granted funding for the CARA, Adopted Physical Activity Centre, to run an event through the Sports Inclusion Disability Programme in the Local Sports Partnerships to mark to International Disability Awareness Day on December 3rd. For the Cavan/Monaghan region an Inclusive Outdoor Activity day was held on November 27th at Tanagh Outdoor Education Centre. In total 21 people participated in on the day with groups from Steadfast House, Rehabcare Cavan and Rehabcare Bailieborough all attending the day’s activities, which included open paddle canoeing, archery and wall climbing.
ASA Level 1 Swim Course for teaching people with Disabilities.
This course was organised by Cavan Sports Partnership through funding received from the HSE, which enabled our Sports Inclusion programme to run the course on a cross-county basis. This intensive three day course was held over the first two weekends in November at Cavan Leisure Centre and was delivered by the experienced tutor, Bernie Kearney. In total 12 people successfully completed the training and are now certified by Swim Ireland to support and teach individual swimmers with significant learning, physical or sensory disabilities. The aim of the course is to get more people with a disability involved in swimming and pool based activity for all abilities
